Winter Meeting 2010 – Week 8

This week at SEAOC, Brad Lowe, Vice President of Hope Engineers gave a presentation on how to be successful early in a structural engineering career. Brad talked about learning on the job, and how we “don’t know squat” after graduating from college. The upbeat, humorous, and informative lecture was enjoyed by all while eating lunch.

7^th week stretch time! This week at SEAOC was a tri-tip BBQ. Thankfully the weather cleared up and it was a beautiful day for a BBQ. Members of SEAOC enjoyed tri-tip sandwiches and steamed veggies while relaxing from homework, projects, and classes. All in all 7^th week stretch was a much needed break from all the hard work and the rain!

This week at SEAOC, Damon Ho, an engineer from Simpson Strong-Tie and previous ARCE faculty member gave a presentation on Simpson’s full-scale 7-story timber shake table test in Japan. SEAOC members thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating presentation. A few highlights of the presentation were the time-lapse video of construction and the video of the building being tested. Damon also touched on the new moment frames that were being tested and the findings of the testing. As always, Damon gave a very interesting presentation, and the ARCE department is always happy to have him back.

This week at SEAOC, members signed up for the 20^th annual Structural Forum. As always, there was a large turnout of students looking to sign up to sit with the company of their first choice. Students ate pizza and got to catch up with one another while waiting to sign up. Signing up and learning more about the speakers got everyone excited for how fantastic this year’s structural will be.

This week at SEAOC Ken O’Dell spoke on leadership in a company, the industry, and life. He gave some great advice on what makes a leader and how to become a leader. The advice was food for thought and provided some wonderful insight for the ARCE students.

Mason Walters from Forell/Elsesser came and spoke to SEAOC this week. He spoke on a new building for UCSF. Some members of the club got to tour this building while in San Francisco, but this was a great opportunity for the entire club to learn about the building more in depth. Mason brought along his homemade model of isolators and even let members play with this model.

Back from winter break the members of SEAOC started the quarter off with a friendly competition of bridge building. The meeting was a great way for members catch up, get information on the Spring Break trip to Vancouver, B.C., and build some bridges!

Fall End of the Quarter Party

The Friday of dead week, SEAOC members migrated to Downtown Brew to enjoy the traditional end of the quarter party. The students got to relax, kick back, and de-stress from final submittals. A fantastic time was had by all, and our old friend Carrie even came to catch up with everyone!

ARCE students enjoyed a home cooked Thanksgiving meal the week before they were off for break. Students enjoyed the delicious food and were thankful for being ARCEs.

Last week, Darell Lawver, an Associate Principal at Weidlinger & Associates, gave a presentation on when simplified single-degree-of-freedom analysis can be used versus when more advanced methods should be used for Blast Design. SEAOC members enjoyed the presentation while enjoying food from Panda Express.
